I’ve reviewed this model before, but not in depth. The New Balance 998 came out in the late 80s and is known for material quality throughout its various releases and wide-foot friendly comfort.
Most 998s I’ve purchased have been a part of some themed pack, although there are some that are standalone colorways.
Some NB fans and sneaker collectors in general aren’t feeling the slightly bulkier toebox shape on the 998. I for one enjoy it though even though I prefer the slope on the 997 and 1500. The toebox width gives a bit more comfort at a slight cost to style, but in my opinion it’s worth it.
Materials
As per any Made in USA New Balance, the quality on these 998s is exceptional. The suede, mesh, leather and 3M all come together to reflect the superior craftsmanship we’ve come to expect from New Balance. The suede is so lush and buttery – if you’re a sneakerhead that shops based on materials, you definitely won’t be disappointed with these!
Fit
The NB998 fits true to size on the larger side, and I could get away with a half size down if it really came down to it. While less sharp at the toe than some other retro NBs, the shape on these is still great. From the side, we still get some of that pointy-toe runner flavor going on, which looks dope on foot and in pictures.
